If you stepped outside this morning in Hamilton, Burlington, or Oakville and were hit with that unmistakable, pungent aroma, you aren’t alone.
March in Southern Ontario is the absolute peak of skunk mating season. While skunks are generally shy and nocturnal, February and March are the only months of the year when they become bold, mobile, and, most notably, stinky.
The Skunk Funk Explained: Why Now?
The smell you’re noticing isn’t just a skunk passing by; it’s often a sign of romantic rejection. During mating season, male skunks travel long distances (sometimes up to 5km) to find a mate. If a female isn’t interested or is already pregnant, she uses her primary defence, her spray, to drive the suitor away.
There’s a danger for homeowners? When females begin scouting for maternity dens. They look for easy-to-dig areas under decks, sheds, and concrete porches. If they successfully burrow under your home now, you’ll be dealing with a litter of 4–6 kits by May.
PRO TIP: My Dog Just Got Sprayed! What Now?
Forget the tomato juice. It only masks the smell and stains your dog orange. If your pet takes a direct hit this spring, use this chemist-approved DIY recipe to actually neutralize the oils:
- 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
- 1/4 cup of Baking Soda
- 1 teaspoon of Liquid Dish Soap (like Dawn)
Important: Mix it in an open bucket (it bubbles!) and use it immediately. Wash your pet outside so the oils don’t travel into your carpets. Rinse thoroughly after 5 minutes. Avoid the eyes!
The Bad Company 4-Step Skunk Eviction Process
Removing a skunk requires a delicate touch to avoid a spray event on your property. Our skunk removal process is designed to be scent-free and permanent.
1. Foundation & Perimeter Inspection
We walk your property to find active burrows. Skunks don’t need much space. A gap the size of a grapefruit is enough for them to slide under your backyard shed.
2. One-Way Door Installation
We install a specialized floor-level one-way door at the main entry point. This allows the skunk to leave for its nightly foraging but prevents it from getting back under your deck.
3. Professional Trench Screening
Skunks are Olympic-level diggers. To prevent a new skunk from moving in next week, we perform trenching. We dig a 12-inch deep trench around the perimeter of your deck or shed and install heavy-duty galvanized steel mesh. Even the most determined skunk can’t dig through steel.
4. Scent Neutralization
If a skunk has already sprayed under your home, we use professional-grade oxidizing agents to break down the thiols (the sulphur compounds) in the spray, neutralizing the odour rather than just masking it.
Health & Safety: Rabies in Southern Ontario
According to the City of Hamilton Health Surveillance, skunks account for a significant portion of all positive rabies cases in the region.
- The Warning Sign: While skunks are more active during the day in March because they are searching for mates, any skunk acting drunk, aggressive, or overly friendly should be reported to a wildlife removal expert immediately.
- The Pet Factor: Beyond the smell, a skunk bite is a medical emergency for a pet. Ensure your dogs and cats are up to date on their vaccinations as required by Ontario law.
Protecting Your Lawn & Property
During the mating season, skunks need high energy and will flip sections of your sod to find white grubs.
The Quick Fix: If you see cone-shaped holes, your lawn has a grub problem. While we handle the skunk removal, we recommend a seasonal nematode treatment to remove their food source.

Legal Requirements
Under the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, you cannot legally relocate a skunk more than 1 kilometre away. Our humane exclusion method keeps the animal in its home range while permanently barring it from your house.
Whether you are in Hamilton, Burlington, or Niagara, our team at Bad Company Wildlife can secure your perimeter before the kits arrive.
